Forest Green boss Steve Cotterill backs ‘friend’ Lee Carsley for England job

MOST READ

Forest Green boss Steve Cotterill has backed interim England boss Lee Carsley to land the job on a full-time basis.

Carsley was employed as assistant manager to Cotterill at Birmingham City six years ago after being promoted from an academy role. He is now nailed-on favourite to land the England job. And Cotterill insists his former assistant is the right man for the job, he told Stroud Times: “I spoke to him (Lee Carsley) the other day. I’m not surprised at his progress as he’s a good coach, great guy and a good friend.

“I haven’t managed to see the games because obviously we’ve been playing, but I’m really pleased for him and hopefully he continues to do well and then it gives the FA a decision to make.”

Cotterill believes Carsley has made a “really good fist of the job so far” and believes his former assistant is firmly in the driving seat despite Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola in the running for the job with the bookies.

Cotterill added: “If they can’t get Pep Guardiola, I would be stereotyped with an Englishman if Pep Guardiola wanted the job, then I think he’s the he’s the best, but Lee Carsley has made a really good fist of it so far.”
