A group of armed forces veterans recently set about restoring a number of gravestones in a church cemetery – with the help of the Military Grave Restorer, Steve Davies.

Organised by former soldier Jenny Naylor, and sponsored by the Veterans Foundation, the team worked at St James’ Church, Charfield. They set about tidying some overgrown graves, making others safe, as well as retouching the lettering.

“It’s mainly reinstatement, so where curbs have fallen away, where headstones have fallen down. We’re also cleaning, using environmentally-friendly cleaning products,” explained Steve.

“I do this all around the country. I’ve cleaned probably close to 1,000 graves, about 41 memorials, and a dozen statues. I’ve been doing this for about six and a half years, and I love it.”
