Brimscombe & Thrupp boss Tim Bond was delighted to see his side get off to a flying start with a 3–1 victory over much-fancied Wantage Town in their opening game of the new Hellenic League Division One West season.
A brace from Jay Griffiths and a Ben Saunders strike saw the Lilywhites come from behind after Liam Campbell had nosed Wantage ahead.
“It’s the kind of start every manager hopes for on the eve of a new season,” said Bond. “We knew Wantage would be a tough test—they’ve got real quality throughout their side—and they certainly showed that.

“It took us a little while to find our rhythm, and they deservedly took the lead. But credit to the lads: they responded brilliantly and got us level not long after.
“That equaliser was especially satisfying from a coaching point of view, as it came straight from something we’d worked on during the week.
“It wasn’t a game with loads of chances, but we were clinical when it counted. Two excellent passages of play led to goals that ultimately won us the game.
“It’s just one game, and we’re not getting carried away, but considering how new this group is—and factoring in a couple of very recent signings—it’s a performance we can be proud of.
“What stood out for me was the togetherness and energy the lads showed throughout. That’s the standard now. There’s still lots to work on, and we’ll regroup and turn our attention to Tuesday night’s home game against Chipping Sodbury.”
