What’s on in Stroud this week: 29 September – 5 October
Though the sun has been shining, with September turning to October the nights are definitely drawing in, the leaves are turning and summer feelings are slowly slipping away. Even so, it’s still a great time to get out and about and enjoy events in the Stroud district.
This week, celebrated local clown Tweedy opens the new look red Rodborough Community Hall on Sunday, Turner Prize winner Jeremy Dellery brings a new exhibition to the SVA John Street Gallery and the Stroud Songwriters Circle host their monthly event at the Woolpack.
Meanwhile, a special exhibition at the Sub Rooms brings together the cream of Stroud’s local history societies, the Bowbridge Arms marks Oktoberfest, and Bisley Bluecoat School holds its autumn fair.

Regular and one off events
- Learn the history of Stroud’s highways, byways and turnpikes – Wed 1 – Sun 5 Oct – 10am – 4pm
This special exhibition marking the launch of a new book by the same name explores the history of roads and tracks around the Stroud district. The exhibition brings together a number of local history societies to explore ancient tracks, turnpikes, tollgates, coaching inns, wagons, stagecoaches and their passengers.
- Enjoy the Bowbridge Arms Oktoberfest celebrations – Fri 3 Oct, 7pm
In celebration of the season, the team at the Bowbridge Arms lay on a special German night. Expect beer, sausages and traditional German tunes (and some pop and rock classics) from the JP Bavarian AllStars.
- Attend the autumn fair at Bisley Bluecoat School – Sat 4 Oct, 2 – 5pm
The Bisley Bluecoat School PTA host their autumn fair this Saturday. Come expecting inflatables, games and food & drink. Plus a dog show with prizes for fancy dress dog, waggiest tail and best trick.
- Explore the story of Rodborough Common – Sun 5 Oct, 10:30am
Sharon Gardham leads this short history of Rodborough Common, using documentary evidence and the clues left on the land itself. Participants will explore more than a millennium of history, exploring how Rodborough has been shaped by its past inhabitants, both human and non-human.
- Step inside the new Rodborough Community Hall – Sun 5 Oct, 3 – 5pm
All are welcome to witness Tweedy the Clown open the newly redeveloped Rodborough Community Hall. Explore the extended main room and new smaller meeting room and learn about the hall’s new colour and green credentials.
- Commune with the Stroud Songwriters Circle – Sun 5 Oct, 6pm
The monthly meetings of the Stroud Songwriters Circle have once again returned to the Woolpack in Slad. Join budding songwriters to share their work on the first Sunday of each Month, with songs and stories on offer in a supportive space.

- Explore Jeremy Deller’s Interventions – Fri 3 – Sat 11 Oct
Celebrated local bespoke framers Darbyshire present this collection of work by Jeremy Deller at the SVA John Street Gallery. The works were previously shown earlier in the year at Darybshire’s White Lion Street studio in London to coincide with the final stage of Deller’s ‘Triumph of Art’ celebration in Trafalgar Square.

- Attend the Wormside Ploughing Match – Sat 4 Oct
We are now deep into the ploughing contest season, and the 181st Wormside Agricultural Improvement Society Ploughing Match takes place this year at Upper Chilstone in Madley, Herefordshire by kind permission of the Griffiths Family. Expect horse ploughing, vintage tractor ploughing, domestic and children’s classes, as well as hot food and drink.
