New youth football team formed

A new era for local U16 youth football begins next season as coaches from Minchinhampton U15s and Rodborough U15s join forces to form Taverners Youth FC at U16 level next season.

Based at the Taverners ground in Eastington, the new side will benefit from an excellent pitch, changing facilities and a welcoming clubhouse environment.

The aim is clear: to build a talented, competitive squad with a genuine pathway into senior football.

Both Minchinhampton and Rodborough currently compete in Division A of the Severn Valley League, already playing at a very strong standard of youth football. The ambition is to maintain that level and go on to compete at the highest standard possible as Taverners FC.

The team will be led by former Shortwood United and Taverners striker Rich Kerry, supported by Matt Jones. Both are FA-qualified coaches who have played at a strong competitive level and together bring over 20 years of youth coaching experience.

Their philosophy goes beyond results – focusing on developing technically strong players, responsible young men and a team culture built on standards, discipline and genuine enjoyment of the game.

Richard Kerry said: “We want to create a structured, ambitious environment while keeping the love of football at the heart of everything we do. The link to the men’s team gives these lads a real opportunity to progress.”

Training trials will take place through the end of this season and into the summer ahead of official team selection.

With Taverners already running a senior side, there will be clear opportunities for players to progress into men’s football at the appropriate stage of development.

Off the pitch, Taverners FC will foster a strong community around the team creating social opportunities for parents through clubhouse events, fundraising activities and planned end-of-season tours.

Most importantly, at the heart of everything the club does is the aim to build a group of players who become genuine friends,  forming positive, supportive relationships that extend well beyond youth football.

Sponsorship opportunities are currently being secured. Local businesses interested in supporting an ambitious and community-driven youth football project are encouraged to get in touch.

Training details will be announced shortly, and expressions of interest from players and sponsors are now invited. The team will be arranging friendlies this season to give the players a feel for next season!
