Dr Simon Opher MP: Put down your phone and pick up a book this World Book Day

MOST READ

This Thursday, marks World Book Day – the perfect reminder of the incredible power of reading with children.

Taking the time each day to read to your child is one of the most meaningful things you can do for their emotional, social, and intellectual development. It’s not just about enjoying a story – it helps build language skills, vocabulary, and understanding of the world, giving children stronger communication skills and a foundation for lifelong success.

Reading together is more than learning; it’s a shared adventure. Through stories, children experience joys, anxieties, and triumphs alongside characters, helping them feel understood and supported. Encountering characters with familiar lives reaffirms their experiences, while discovering new perspectives fosters empathy and emotional intelligence.

Regular reading also teaches children that knowledge is explored and discovered over time – not just at the click of a button. Books become a doorway to curiosity, understanding, and imagination.

As 2026 is the National Year of Reading, let’s commit to reading with our children (and grandchildren) regularly – and to showing them that we read too.

So this World Book Day, put down your phone, pick up a book, and enjoy the journey together. It’ll do us all good.
