A timely and thought-provoking discussion on the impact of pornography will take place at Stroud Brewery on Saturday, April 18, as authors of the new book Pornocracy visit the town.
Writers Jo Bartosch and Robert Jessel will lead a public discussion titled “Porn: Positive or Problematic?”, examining the cultural, psychological and social effects of pornography in modern society.
Drawing on the arguments explored in Pornocracy, the event will address concerns about the influence of pornography on relationships, attitudes towards women and girls, and wider social norms. Topics will include how pornography may be shaping sexual expectations, the persistence of sexist attitudes among younger generations, and what can be done to promote healthier models of intimacy and respect.
The book has been described by Michael Flood as “a searing indictment of pornography’s pervasive influence on how we have sex, see each other, and live our daily lives,” highlighting its potential role in reinforcing harmful behaviours and inequalities.
The event is organised by GlosWomen, a community group for women in Gloucestershire who share a vision of a world free from male violence and misogyny.
The event is open to all over the age of 18 and will be a mixed-sex discussion. Signed copies of Pornocracy will be available for purchase on the day.
