Stroud Rugby Club has announced with deep sadness the passing of long-serving caretaker Archie Field, who died in the early hours of Tuesday, May 5 at the age of 74 following a short illness.

A club spokesperson paid tribute to Archie, highlighting his extraordinary and lifelong dedication to the club: “With enormous sadness Stroud Rugby announces that Archie Field, our much loved and valued club caretaker passed away this week during the early hours of Tuesday morning. Archie sadly left us after a short illness on Tuesday 5th May, aged 74 years old.

“He was a constant presence at the club, right up until he was taken ill last week. As a club we will forever be grateful for all that he did for us.

“Despite never taking the field as a player, Archie gave a major part of his 74 years to the club. Undertaking a wide variety of jobs, his pride and passion for the club was there for all to see. The wearing of his Stroud Rugby blazer, his badge and his club tie was indeed a sight to see and will be forever etched in all of our memories.

“Archie was a true clubman. The service he has given will not be forgotten and there will always be parts of Fromehall that will forever be, Archie.”
