Unique climbing gym opens at Brimscombe Mill

The UK’s first climbing gym run under a commons model opens today at Brimscombe Mill, marking a new chapter for climbing and community ownership.

Climbing Commons is a collectively governed space where community benefit takes priority over private profit. Inspired by the principles of the commons economy, the project aims to offer a more inclusive, affordable and resilient model for running recreational facilities.

Based in the historic Victorian mill just outside Stroud, it forms part of a growing ecosystem of social enterprises and community initiatives at Brimscombe Mill, developed in partnership with Brimscombe Mill and Stroud Commons.

The project has been brought to life through a community-led fundraising effort that raised just over £60,000. Around £40,000 was invested in building the wall, with the remainder set aside as an operating reserve for its first year.

“Climbing Commons exists because we believe access to climbing, movement, adventure and community shouldn’t depend on how much money you have,” said Chikara Shimasaki, spokesperson for the project. “It shows what communities can achieve when they come together to create and steward something for collective benefit.”

The collective has also documented its process—including governance, funding, and operations—with the aim of helping other communities develop similar commons-based climbing spaces across the UK.

Free taster sessions will begin from 3pm today, Friday.
