Severn Trent is urging customers to reduce their water use after Saturday saw the highest demand for water ever seen in a single day across its network.
The water company said the recent spell of hot, dry weather has led to a sharp increase in consumption, with gardens placing particular pressure on supplies.
While engineers are working around the clock to repair leaks, treat additional drinking water and move supplies around the region, Severn Trent says customers can play a vital role in helping avoid future restrictions.
A Severn Trent spokesperson said: “We’ve seen the highest water demand ever recorded in a single day. The hot, dry weather means we’re all using more water than usual.
“We’re fixing leaks, treating more clean water and moving water around the region, but we need your help too.
“Please use less water, especially in the garden, to help avoid restrictions.”
The company is encouraging customers to think carefully about how they use water during the current dry spell, particularly by reducing outdoor water use where possible.
Simple steps such as using a watering can instead of a hose, delaying car washing and avoiding unnecessary water use can make a significant difference in easing pressure on the network.
The appeal comes as much of the country continues to experience prolonged dry conditions, with water companies closely monitoring supplies and urging households to conserve water wherever possible.
