‘Dirty Business’ initiates water testing workshop

A fact-packed training in how to monitor water and test for pollution took place this week on the Frome at Bowbridge, Stroud, writes Anita van Rossum.

More than 20 people from local groups including River Frome Rights Ritual Restore; Sacred Severn; Bowbridge Bathers and Parents for Future gathered to hear Angela Jones, better known as the ‘Wild Woman of the Wye’ and tireless river campaigner, explain how to collect and submit data relating to the water quality of our River Frome.

The event was triggered by a screening of the outstanding Channel 4 documentary Dirty Business held on June 7th at the Trinity Rooms, which exposed the scandal of unremitting sewage pollution in our rivers and seas.

Angela, as the guest speaker, told a concerned audience that rather than stand by, she’s testing water, setting up local monitoring groups, and inspiring communities to fight for change.

“Rivers are lifelines,” said Angela. “Protect them and we protect ourselves”

“The plan now is to map the Frome, testing from the source down river on a weekly basis throughout the year with local people collaborating as a team of ‘guardians’ each with an allocated place to monitor and report their findings.

“With the correct equipment, we will monitor for water temperature, electrical conductivity, nitrates, phosphates, and ammonia all of which are critical indicators of a healthy river.”

This initiative is part of a nationwide movement across the UK where local communities are becoming river guardians.

Apart from this committed band of citizen scientists, it is hoped to connect with a relevant University department and with anyone in the community who wishes to add their skills and knowledge to this important and urgent task to keep our waterways safe for all.
