Horse riders, cyclists and motorists are being invited to a free road safety awareness evening at Stroud Farm Services aimed at making the district’s rural roads safer for everyone.
The event, taking place on Wednesday, September 30, from 6pm to 8pm, will feature a presentation by Alan Hiscox, Director of Safety at the British Horse Society, who will explain the nationally recognised DEADSLOW campaign and offer practical advice on how drivers and riders can share the roads more safely.
The DEADSLOW campaign encourages motorists to:
- Slow down when approaching horses.
- Pass horses wide and at a safe speed.
- Be patient.
- Avoid sounding horns or revving engines.
- Always follow a rider’s hand signals.
Alongside the presentation, Stroud Farm Services will be promoting its own ‘Be Seen’ campaign, offering exclusive discounts on high-visibility clothing and equipment for both horses and riders as the darker autumn evenings approach.
The evening has been organised with the support of local horse rider Mark Sweeting, who has helped introduce horse warning signs across the area to improve road safety. He is working alongside Fiona from Stroud Farm Services, who understands the risks riders face after being involved in a road traffic collision herself.
Together, they hope the event will raise awareness, encourage safer driving and help prevent future incidents on Gloucestershire’s country roads.
