What’s on in Stroud this week: 1 – 6 September
September is upon us, and with it a flood of weekend events organised by those who were keen to avoid the summer holidays.
Morris dancers take to the streets of Stroud this weekend for a celebration of a decade of Miserden Morris, with guest side the Jolly Boys also performing at Stroud Brewery and the Prince Albert on Friday evening.
Meanwhile, the Crown and Sceptre hosts an Americana all dayer on Saturday, and the first ever Cam Peak Fest kicks Everlands Sports Field in Cam. Plus, for those not yet ready to wave goodbye to summer fete season, the annual event at the Whiteway Colony is always a highlight.

Regular and one off events
- See the Jolly Boys Morris – Fri 4 Sep, 3pm
Morris dancing side the Jolly Boys set up shop in the garden at Stroud Brewery for an afternoon of traditional Morris dancing. Hailing from Kent, the Boys are on a regional tour which is also set to take them to the Prince Albert in Rodborough after 7pm.
- Celebrate ten years of Miserden Morris– Fri 4 – Sat 5 Sep
One of Stroud’s two Merry-family-influenced Morris dancing sides celebrates a decade of hopping this weekend, with a two day event. Proceedings begin with a folk session at the Little Vic on Friday evening, followed by a day of dance with guest sides at various locations around town on Saturday and an evening Ceilidh at St Laurence’s Church in the evening.
- Mark Palestine Global Awareness Day– Sat 5 Sep, 12 noon – 4pm
Stroud District Coalition for a Just Peace in Palestine, Stroud Palestine Solidarity Campaign and Community Solidarity Stroud District take over Bank Gardens and Lansdown Hall for a special event scheduled to mark Global Awareness Day. The family-friendly event is set to include music, talks, activities, stalls and food.
- Listen to Bluegrass and Americana at the Crown and Sceptre– Sat 5 Sep, 12 noon
The Crown and Sceptre’s Outer Fringe events draw to a close this weekend, but not before a full day of Bluegrass and Americana on Saturday, including a chilli cook off. The event features music from Luke Philbrick and the Solid Gone Skiffle Invasion, Trevor Babajack Steger and Sons of The Delta.
- Enjoy the first Cam Peak Fest– Sat 5 Sep, 12 noon – 11pm
The first ever Cam Peak Fest kicks off this Saturday at Cam’s Everlands Sports Field, with a range of musical acts performing to raise funds for local charities such as the GL11 Community Hub, and The Cam Youth and Community Centre. Performers are expected to include Thrill Collins, Shanghai Shuffle and Magerison.
- Attend Whiteway Colony Fete– Sun 6 Sep – 1 – 4.30pm
Founded in 1898 by Tolstoyan anarchists who cycled out in their corduroys in search of a better life, today the Whiteway Colony is home to more than a hundred people. Their annual fete is always a highlight of colony life, with stalls, a bouncy slide, a traditional tea tent, bar and barbecue, plus a dog show and usually a rare chance to swim in the colony outdoor pool.

- See the Jason Wason retrospective– Opens Sat 5 Sep
Chalford’s Gallery Pangolin hosts a solo retrospective, showcasing selected works from across eighty-year-old ceramicist Jason Wason’s career. Wason has lived and worked on Cornwall’s rugged West Penwith peninsula for over thirty years, and his works are informed by the location, his travels around the world, and his understanding of ancient and ceremonial pottery.

- Dive into history at Gloucester History Festival– Sat 5 – Sun 20 Sep
Gloucester History Festival returns to Blackfriars Priory, this year as guests of English Heritage after Gloucester City Council returned the lease in May. This year’s festival features over 150 speakers including David Olusoga, Tony Robinson, Michael Wood and Jung Chang.
