Friday evening saw the preview of Hundred Heroines’ exhibition, Stardust, which is on show at their new location in Pensile Road, Nailsworth.
The exhibition, in collaboration with Sisters of the Lens, explores the women who shaped the image of celebrity during the 20th century. It features images of stars of stage and screen ranging from early movie stars Vivienne Leigh, Marlene Dietrich and Tallulah Bankhead through to contemporary portraits by internationally acclaimed photographer Jillian Edelstein.
Ms Edelstein was at the preview and told Stroud Times: “My involvement with this exhibition is that the curator, Del Barrett, has chosen a number of portrait images of mine that I’ve taken through the years.
“I think a lot of them were taken on medium and large format [film] cameras, so probably from the 90s onwards.”
Her pictures in the exhibition range from monochrome portraits of writer and actor Quentin Crisp, through to more recent pictures of musicians Amy Winehouse and Yoko Ono.
Born in South Africa, began her career as a press photographer before moving to London in the 1980s to study photojournalism. Her work has been published in many international publications including Vogue and the New York Times Magazine.
Del Barrett, Founder and Chair of Hundred Heroines, told Stroud Times: “We couldn’t have asked for a better opening night. The gallery was packed and there was a real buzz in the space.
“It was magical to see Stardust finally come to life. A great way to begin the next chapter of Hundred Heroines, and a big shout out to the team and all the volunteers who helped make it happen.”
Stardust is on show at Hundred Heroines Photo Museum, Thursday to Saturdays, 11am-4pm, as well as works in Mortimer Gardens Nailsworth. The exhibition runs until November 20th.
