Hardship fund will help the vulnerable, insists Stroud MP

Stroud MP Siobhan Baillie has championed the Government’s announcement of a £500 million winter hardship fund to help the most vulnerable in the months to come.

The new Household Support Fund will support millions in England and will be distributed by councils from October.

It was announced on the day furlough has ended and ahead of the end of the £20 uplift in Universal Credit next month.

“I am really pleased the Government has announced this additional safety net for the most vulnerable as another temporary Covid support comes to an end,” she said.

“Ministers have recognised that the recent rise in energy costs and the ongoing recovery from the pandemic will be a challenge for some.

“It is a substantial sum of money to be spent locally by councils. Importantly, it is targeted support and that is the best way to help those who need it the most.

“I would urge anyone who is struggling with food or bills to apply for this help as soon as possible.”
