Caught on camera: beautiful pictures of the aurora

Amy Bowden captured these amazing images of the aurora borealis – commonly known at the northern lights – last night.

“They were taken at 11.30pm in Avening from the Baptist Church at the top of the High Street,” said Amy, who captured them on her iPhone.

“I love the night sky so always stay updated on possible aurora activity. As an avid sky watcher it’s always exciting to capture a moment like that.”

The UK is south of the natural aurora belt, which usually occurs over regions like Norway, Iceland, and Greenland, so it’s relatively rare for the aurora to be directly visible in the UK.
