Community rejoices as bus service between Yate and Wotton-under-Edge is reinstated

Campaigners and residents are celebrating the long-awaited return of the Y8 bus service, a key transport link between Yate and Wotton-under-Edge, set to resume on September 1.

The reinstatement follows an impassioned and coordinated campaign led by local champion Barbara Lawrence, supported by community groups, residents, local councillors, and businesses. Their persistent efforts included public petitions, community meetings, and strong grassroots engagement, underscoring the crucial role of public transport in daily life.

The West of England Combined Authority (WECA) has provided funding and backing for the restored service, with thanks extended by Gloucestershire County Council for their support and recognition of the broader value of reliable transport in rural communities.

The new Y8 service will run as a circular route, starting and ending in Yate, with 15 weekday trips and 12 Saturday trips, all passing through Wotton-under-Edge. This frequency offers vital flexibility for commuting, shopping, education, and social connection, while supporting local businesses and reducing car dependency.

Cllr. Roger Whyborn, Cabinet Member for Sustainable Transport and Strategic Highways, praised the collaborative effort: “This has been a great example of three councils and the community working together to reinstate a vital service. Well done to the community for not letting this go.”

Cllr. Linda Cohen, for Wotton-under-Edge, added: “This outcome shows the power of collective action. It will genuinely improve daily life for many people in our area.”

Timetables will be published soon by WECA. This victory marks a significant step forward in reconnecting communities and enhancing access and sustainability across the region.
