Stroud record shop Sound Records is one of only two in Gloucestershire participating in this year’s Record Store Day and long queues are expected from early in the morning on Saturday, April 12.
Shop proprietor Tom Berry said: “Its Christmas time for vinyl lovers as over 400 releases are available for the very first time. There really is something for everyone this year from reggae to jazz, folk to rock.
“We’ll also have a selection of my very favourite DJs from across the West of England in Wales playing in the shop throughout the day including; Elle B from Gloucester, Don Leisure from Cardiff and Random Rules from Swindon. There is also a special Record Store Day beer from Deya Brewery in Cheltenham so the party will be in full swing all day.”
We asked Tom to nominate his five crucial releases this year. This is what he highlighted:
Rumble In The Jungle – Various
That great period pre-jungle when the breakbeat atom was split – Ragga Twins, General Levi, Barrington Levi and Cutty Ranks make for an essential selection on Soul Jazz Records.
The First Family – Sly & The Family Stone
A previously unissued live recording from the first family of funk. This has a beautiful 24 page booklet and is pressed on clear wax…
Look Over The Nile – Sylvain Carel
A hyper-rare 1982 French Private Press of Berlin School Kosmiche. For fans of Tangerine Dream, Cluster, Yellow Magic Orchestra et al!
The Cure (Alone) – For Tet remix
Too much talent on one record to ignore!
Freddie Hubbard On Fire
A 3 LP set from 1967 featuring an all-star band including Bennie Maupin, Kenny Barron, Herbie Lewis and Freddie Waits. This has a lovely 16 page booklet with this one.
Sound Records opens 8am sharp with the queues forming much earlier!
