Independent charity Crimestoppers has launched a new campaign across the South West to highlight the growing impact of shoplifting and retail crime on local businesses, shop workers and communities — and to encourage people to share what they know 100% anonymously.
Shoplifting continues to rise at an alarming rate across the UK. According to the British Retail Consortium, incidents have almost doubled in a year, climbing from 8 million in 2023 to 16.7 million in 2024. Losses from retail theft are estimated to have cost businesses £1.8 billion, with the South West not immune to this nationwide trend.
Organised raids targeting retail outlets are increasingly clearing shelves of goods later sold via online marketplaces or through unscrupulous resale channels. The trade in stolen items fuels the cycle of theft, threatening jobs, staff safety and community wellbeing.
Crimestoppers’ campaign seeks to remind the public that shoplifting is not a victimless crime. Beyond financial loss, staff are frequently subjected to threats, verbal abuse and intimidation. In some areas, repeated theft and aggression have forced local shops to reduce opening hours or close altogether, cutting vital services and livelihoods.
Beth Simpson, South Central West Regional Manager for Crimestoppers, said: “Shoplifting and retail crime have a devastating ripple effect. Behind every theft is a shop worker who may have been abused or intimidated, and a local business under pressure to stay open. This kind of behaviour damages livelihoods and weakens trust in our communities. We’re asking anyone who knows about individuals or groups behind organised thefts, or where stolen goods are being sold, to speak up anonymously. You will never be asked for your name or any personal details, and your information could make a real difference.”
Crimestoppers urges anyone with information about shoplifting or retail crime to contact the charity anonymously on 0800 555 111 or via the secure online form at crimestoppers-uk.org.
