A rare Bible, printed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I, has sold at Wotton Auction Rooms  for a whopping £8,600.

Printed in Rouen, France in 1566, the Bible went under the hammer at Wotton Auction Rooms in Wotton-under-Edge on Wednesday.

Prior to the auction, the Bible had an estimated price of £1,000 – £1,500.

Managing Director, Auctioneer and Valuer Joseph Trinder said: “It was a real privilege to have worked with this important Elizabethan bible and to have stewarded it to the next chapter in its story – a rare survivor, it’s quite remarkable that an example as early as this has survived in such condition and completeness.

“With international interest, the bible surpassed our estimates to fetch an impressive £8,600 (inclusive of auction fees) – going to a UK-based collector.”
