Aerial photographs clearly show the impact of this summer’s prolonged heatwaves on common land around Stroud.
Amber heat health alerts, issued by the UK Heath Security Agency (UKHSA), are in place for the whole of the UK from 9am on Tuesday, August 11th to 9pm on Friday, August 14th. The agency states that ‘rising temperatures this week may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups.’
With an increased risk of wildfires, a spokesperson for the National Trust told Stroud Times: “The commons along with all other coast and countryside sites cared for by the National Trust are experiencing extremely high temperatures and drought conditions.
“We are asking all visitors to follow the countryside code and not to use disposable BBQs or leave rubbish behind. The risk of fires increases dramatically during hot and dry spells. We’re asking everyone to take precautions to protect themselves and nature and wildlife.
“Extreme heat and a lack of rain put the countryside under severe pressure and swathes of land are dry. Wildfires have reaped significant damage to National Trust places in the last few years.
“Wildfires put a lot of pressure on emergency services and endanger local communities and wildlife.”
