With the solar eclipse set to cast a surreal twilight over Cromhall Quarry tomorrow, the stage is set for an unmissable evening of sport as a sell-out field gathers for Race 4 of The Lake Triathlon Series.
Against this celestial spectacle, competitors will dive into the waters of The Lake before tackling the surrounding country lanes in the summer’s penultimate sprint. With three rounds completed and the leaderboard taking shape ahead of September’s Grand Finale, the darkening skies only amplify the high stakes as overall race winners, series leaders, and rising contenders go head-to-head.
The men’s division features a high-stakes championship battle as the race for the overall series crown heats up. With series leader Harry Bunting and second-placed Dominic Middleton-Frith both absent from the start line, the door swings wide open for third-placed Matthew Peters (197 pts) and fourth-placed Miguel Alvarez (196 pts). Separated by just a single point in the standings, both will be eager to capitalise and haul themselves right back into title contention. Peters, the Race 2 champion, has been the benchmark for consistency all summer, slashing his winning time down to 1:06:09 in Race 3, making him a major contender for maximum points tomorrow. However, standing in their way is speedster Matt Hann, who delivered a blistering 1:01:47 in Race 3. While lower on the cumulative leaderboard due to fewer entries, Hann’s raw pace makes him the fastest man on paper and a prime favourite to cross the line first.
Adding further depth to the men’s race, Edward Bamford returns after securing seventh place overall in Race 3, and he will be pushing hard to break into the top five. James Tarver is another athlete on the rise following a breakthrough eighth-place finish in the third race, where course familiarity could see him shave off even more time. Meanwhile, veteran contender Steve Payne, who grabbed fourth place overall in Race 2 with a time of 1:09:32, remains a constant threat at the front thanks to his experience and razor-sharp transition work.
The women’s division features a highly anticipated heavyweight rematch alongside a tight season-long points race. Penny Guess has been the standout athlete of the series, winning the women’s wave in Race 1 in 1:09:08 and Race 3 in 1:12:27, while taking second female in Race 2. Currently topping the cumulative female leaderboard, Guess will be aiming to lock down her third victory of the season. However, she faces a major challenge from Ellie Hunter, who produced a remarkable debut in Race 2 to take first female and fifth place overall in 1:10:39. Hunter’s return sets up a blockbuster showdown between two of the series’ fastest racers.
Behind the lead duo, the battle for championship podium positions remains intensely competitive. Ella Clark and Hannah Asbridge hold second and third place respectively in the overall female series standings, both having shown model determination and steady time improvements across every event. Sitting comfortably in fourth place overall, Sally Yu has continually sliced time off her performances throughout the summer and will be targeting a breakthrough into the top three female spots.
