EXCLUSIVE: developer issues plans for Brimscombe Port

The company behind plans to redevelop Brimscombe Port has denied claims they are about to pull out of the project.

An unnamed source contacted Stroud Times to claim housebuilder St Modwen Homes had pulled the plug on the development. However, Stroud District Council and the developer have moved quickly to dismiss rumours that they are about to withdraw from the scheme.

A joint statement sent to Stroud Times by St Modwen Homes and Stroud District Council said: “Stroud District Council and St Modwen Homes continue to work together with partners and key stakeholders to progress the Brimscombe Port development. A public consultation is expected by the end of 2024, prior to finalising the detailed planning application. We look forward to engaging with the local community as we work to deliver much-needed homes and a new community at Brimscombe Port.”

Brimscombe Port was demolished more than three years ago and forced closure of nationally-renowned Rush Skatepark, along with charities The Long Table, Kids Stuff and The Bike Drop, who moved to nearby Brimscombe Mill.

Stroud District Council appointed Birmingham-based St. Modwen Homes in July 2022 as their chosen developer for the brownfield site, promising a low carbon development of 150 new sustainable homes, comprising 30 per cent affordable housing.

In a statement in July 2023, Stroud District Council Leader Catherine Braun and developer St Modwen Homes insisted they remained committed to building a new canal side community in the heart of the Golden Valley: “We and St Modwen Homes continue to progress the Brimscombe Port development – demolition is complete, St Modwen Homes has been selected, and we are all committed to carrying out further public consultation.

“As with many major brownfield redevelopment programmes, it is taking longer than originally anticipated – it’s a difficult site with a legacy of contamination, and a canal basin which forms part of the planned Cotswold Canals restoration.”
