Dear Editor,
Just to remind the good people of Stroud, and our visitors! The Stroud Farmers’ Market has become quite well-known recently, but – did you know? – the market in the Shambles, just on the other side of the High Street, has been around for more than 400 years.
A brief bit of history – the old Town Hall on the right of The Shambles dates from the late 1500s and the market stalls were originally in the arches underneath – ‘Shambles’ is the old word for butchers stalls in a meat market; and John Wesley preached here in 1742.
There is Vintage Mary on Mondays; and an Outdoor Market from 8 am to 2 pm and an Indoor Market from 8 am to 3 pm on Fridays and Saturdays.
Here you can find such a variety of stalls to browse – cheese; fish; vegetables; organic vegetables; coffee; honey; olive oil; mead; vegan dishes; home baking; cards and other creations by local artists; second hand books; vintage models and trains; original cards and prints from local artists and photographers; handmade high end gold and silver jewellery; stained glass art; crochet, felting, knitting and sewing; incense; tailoring; coins; home baking; crafts from local craftsmen and abroad; vintage records/CDs; dog and equine products – and much more!
Such a lot to browse and buy – see you here!
