Fan column: Forest Green’s shift from stability to opportunity?

MOST READ

In my last column, I suggested we’d likely hear from Steve Cotterill to provide some clarity. Well, folks – clarity has prevailed, just not in words, but in his departure.

With Cotterill leaving, just days before pre-season, it leaves FGR in familiar territory. After 18 months of relative stability, it’s hard to avoid a sense of déjà vu as we head towards the new campaign without a manager in place.

Naturally, questions will arise. Was this a clash over control, recruitment, or strategy? Or simply a matter of timing and personal choice? Until further details come to light – if they do – we can only speculate.

What we do know is this: Cotterill steadied the ship in turbulent times. He reconnected the team with the fanbase, restored pride on the pitch, and steadied a club reeling from consecutive relegations, rekindling resilience and, more crucially, hope.

Whatever your view of Cotterill, I believe he was the right man to guide us into the National League and bring much-needed belief and stability.

Ultimately, this moment will test the strength of the new structure at Forest Green. The hope is that the Director of Football model provides the foundation needed to navigate change, without losing the momentum built last season.

In a volatile industry, adaptability is increasingly the difference between success and failure.

The next managerial appointment is undeniably crucial. As a fan, I understand the desire for instant success, though this appointment must be calculated and aligned with the club’s long-term vision.

Patience will be essential from both the club and us fans. With a new manager and key signings on the horizon, Forest Green has a real chance to establish itself as a force in the National League, playing a style of football we can all get behind and be proud of.
