Father and son take big steps for Autism Awareness Month

An inspiring father-son duo from Stroud have completed a sponsored walk to raise funds and awareness for the National Autistic Society, touching hearts in their community and beyond.

Sam,7, who was diagnosed as autistic in December 2024, and his proud dad Tom, took on the challenge together, walking an impressive 17 miles.

Tom walked the first 12 and a half miles alone and was joined by Sam to complete the last five miles. They walked through the beautiful Cotswold valleys, fields and countryside together ending their walk at The Gloucestershire Autism Centre where Sam was assessed and his family were supported throughout and after his diagnosis. Their efforts have so far raised an impressive £1,500 with donations still coming in.

Sam’s dad said: “It was originally Sam’s idea to do a sponsored walk to raise funds for the National Autism Society after we had spoken about Autism awareness month. Sam’s diagnosis has had a huge positive impact upon Sam and his love of walking made this challenge a perfect combination. Walking is something we enjoy as a family and so it felt very special that we could do this challenge together. We had a lot of fun along the way, blowing dandelions, spotting nature and for the final stretch of the walk making some walking sticks to help Sam finish the walk.”

Wearing Autism awareness T- Shirts and big smiles, the pair were cheered on by friends, family, and well-wishers throughout the route. Sam and his little sister made their own signs to hold to cheer both Sam and Tom on.

At the end of their walk, members of Sam’s family along with Carla the Director of the Gloucestershire Autism Centre greeted Sam and Tom at the Maisemore based Gloucestershire Autism Centre.

“It meant so much to our family that Carla took the time to be there to greet both Sam and I. Sam holds very fond memories of meeting Carla to complete his Autism assessment, a time which could have been filled with anxiety and fear. But instead, is filled with happiness and hope. The sponsored walk reflects Sam’s diagnosis having a positive impact upon his and all the families’ lives.”

Carla from the Gloucestershire Autism Society said: “Sam is an absolute inspiration! Such a brave and wonderful young man. We are thrilled to support his walk, and to see what a positive difference his diagnosis has had, for both him and his family. We focus on strengths at The Gloucestershire Autism Centre, and here we can see many in action – perseverance, empathy and caring for others, creative ideas, stoicism, and tenacity.”

Sams headteacher also said: “We are very proud of Sam and Tom and their achievements. Raising awareness of Autism is so incredibly important and the money they have raised through generous donations is going to a fantastic charity. Well done both, you are superstars.”

The funds raised will go directly to the National Autistic Society, the UK’s leading charity for autistic people and their families, helping to provide crucial services, support networks, and public education.

Sam’s mum Fiona said: “We are so proud of Sam and Tom. It was such a special moment watching the two of them arriving at Maisemore, red faced and sweaty but full of pride. I know that they would’ve had the most incredible quality time on their walk as Sam is such great company.

“There is always an adventure to be had or a question to be answered with Sam by your side. It is a great privilege to be Sam’s parents, he is loved by all (especially his little sister) and his determination and resilience is incredible for a 7 year old boy, let alone one who faces some of the challenges that can arise from being autistic. The funds the boys raised from their walk feels like a reflection of the love and support that surrounds Sam and our family. And it is a beautiful reminder of what is possible when we support and celebrate Neurodivergence.”
