Stroud residents joined Stroud MP Dr Simon Opher, Labour District Councillors, and supporters on Saturday morning for a show of community unity.
The gathering featured England flags emblazoned with words the group says represent true British values, crafted by the Labour Group’s Chair, Cllr Maggie Dutton, using recycled textiles.
“Like many local people, I’m cross that some groups are trying to use our national flag to sow fear and division,” said Cllr Dutton.
“I wanted to do something to represent the views of everyone who shares our true British values. And what better way than using recycled textiles? The district is rooted in textiles and has a proud history of welcoming strangers and those in need of help.”
Cllr Dutton also highlighted the ongoing challenges facing local communities: “Many of the genuine issues that people are struggling with – the cost of housing, the failing NHS, the high cost of living – are hangovers from the previous Government. I’m proud that the Labour Councillors I represent, and the Labour Government, are working hard to turn these around.”
The event celebrated both Stroud’s community spirit and its history of inclusivity, a message of solidarity and shared values.
