The football community came together at Meadowbank on Sunday for a special memorial match celebrating the life of Shortwood United legend Jason Scrivens.
The memorial fixture saw a team of past and present Shortwood United players take on a Forest Green Rovers Legends side, with the younger Wood team claiming a 2-1 victory.
Affectionately known as “Scrivs”, Jason dedicated decades to Shortwood United in a variety of roles, including player, manager, director of football and, most recently, committee member. He also represented Whitminster, Minch RDS and Slimbridge during his playing career, coached at Forest Green Rovers’ youth level and was a popular local DJ, performing at venues including the Queen Victoria and Kitsch.
Joe Wright scored with a well-taken header and Tom Hoskins scored from the penalty spot for a Shortwood sided that also featured Matt Bennett, John Cant, Josh Beadle and James Singh. The Forest Green veterans scored through evergreen striker Paul Hunt, who rolled back the years with a trademark finish, while Alex Sykes had earlier come close with an audacious volley.
Former Forest Green goalkeeper Sam Russell, who played in goal for Rovers and helped organise the event, paid tribute to his close friend.
He said: “Me and Jase, or DJ Scrivs as I first knew him, became mates after we met, and he helped me through some tough times. I’d like to think I was there for him too.
“He always made people smile and was loved by everyone who knew him. We shared some great times together and stayed in touch throughout my football journey. As I settled in the area, we became even closer.”
Reflecting on the day, Russell added: “It was a class day. Everyone enjoyed it. It was full of people and friends, and we raised lots of money with an amazing raffle.
“I loved being out there playing. It was a privilege to be playing for Jason. There were lots of smiles, laughter and tears. The day was fitting for such a popular bloke.
“We’re in talks with Shortwood about making it an annual game and an annual day in memory of Jason. A massive thank you to everyone who donated and made the event happen.”
More than just a football match, the day brought together Jason’s friends, family, former teammates and supporters to celebrate his life.
Off the pitch, supporters enjoyed live music from Stroud Love Radio DJs and guests, alongside a barbecue, licensed bar and a charity raffle featuring signed football memorabilia, beauty treatments, restaurant vouchers and dozens of other prizes.
