Forget 101 Dalmatians…Stroud care home resident celebrates 102nd birthday with dachshunds

A resident at a care home in Stroud turned 102 in true tail-wagging style – with an invasion from her favourite four-legged friends.

Laurice Clark, who lives at Care UK’s Scarlet House on Westward Road, marked her birthday on 19th June with a dachshund-filled garden party.

Having celebrated her 100th birthday two years ago with 30 visiting sausage dogs, the team knew there was only one way to mark another milestone year: by calling on the local community once again for a dachshund gathering even bigger than before.

This year, around 30 dachshunds joined the celebrations again, trotting through the garden to the delight of Laurice. Complete with birthday cake, bubbles and bunting, the party was a joyous celebration of Laurice’s birthday and her lifelong love of the beloved breed.

Laurice said: “I am so pleased that the team organised this for me, I feel so loved and I am sure the doggies feel loved too!”

In her younger years, Laurice and her husband bred dogs, namely four cherished standard-size, smooth-haired black-and-tan dachshunds called Timmy, Tiny, Lucy and Shane. Two of these showstopping pups were entered into competitions across the country, even placing second and third at Crufts under the names Limonite Silver Glance and Limonite Rhodium Gold.

Suzanne Tullett, Home Manager at Scarlet House, said: “Laurice is a much-loved resident here and we couldn’t let her 102nd birthday pass without a proper celebration. Knowing how much she adores dachshunds, we put out the call again – and the local community didn’t disappoint!

“A huge thank you to everyone who brought their dogs along to help us celebrate Laurice’s special day. The joy on her face said it all; it was a truly heart-warming occasion that we’ll all remember.”

Scarlet House is a state-of-the-art care home that provides full-time residential, nursing and dementia care, as well as short-term respite care. The care home incorporates plenty of space for leisure activities and hobbies, and includes its own cinema, hair and beauty salon and pub.
