Former Forest Green boss Rob Edwards in Wolves frame after missing Middlesbrough training

Former Forest Green Rovers boss Rob Edwards has emerged as the front-runner for the Wolves job, after the Middlesbrough manager missed training on Friday morning amid increasing interest from the Premier League club.

Boro also cancelled Edwards’ scheduled press conference ahead of Saturday’s clash with Birmingham City. The move comes after Middlesbrough rejected Wolves’ approach on Thursday to speak with the 41-year-old.

Edwards, who made over 100 appearances for Wolves between 2004 and 2008, later returned to Molineux as Under-23s head coach in 2019 before moving into senior management with Forest Green Rovers leading them into League One in his first and only season at the New Lawn before jumping ship to Watford.

He replaced Michael Carrick at Middlesbrough in the summer and has guided the club to third in the Championship.
