A small beer project on an old trading estate beside a cycle path has transformed a quiet corner of Woodchester into one of the Stroud Valley’s most vibrant community hubs.
When Charlotte and Rich Taylor opened the doors to The Fresh Standard Brew Co. in March 2022, they weren’t sure what to expect. Three years later, their “little beer palace” has become a thriving destination along the A46 for locals, cyclists, walkers, and craft beer lovers.
“When we opened, I thought we might draw in a few beer nerds like Rich,” says co-founder Charlotte. “We weren’t expecting so many local people to adopt us and help us build this community.”

The taproom quickly became known for its relaxed atmosphere and creative beer offerings—but also for its role in bringing the local business community together. Food pop-ups, live music nights, and charity quiz nights have helped other independent traders flourish. Since opening, the once-quiet estate has welcomed a boxing gym, café, and catering company.

“Great coffees and food on an industrial estate is an unusual combination, but it works!” says Beccy Waters, manager at the Coffee Lada. “It’s thanks to Charlotte and Rich’s efforts that our little estate has become a hive of great-quality food, drink, and entertainment for all ages.”
The impact of the brewery’s community focus became especially clear at a last-minute Christmas market in 2024. Charlotte recalls: “It really sank in seeing how many people came, all of them reached by the businesses here and valuing them.”

Charlotte also reminds everyone that the best Christmas market in the Northern Hemisphere returns to Merretts Mills from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. on 14th December.
Local leaders have praised the duo’s efforts.
“Charlotte and Richard have created a brilliant venue with a unique atmosphere, bringing people together from near and far to enjoy locally brewed beer, good food, and vibrant music,” says Cllr Maggie Dutton, Nailsworth. “It’s great to see this small business going from strength to strength, and I wish them every success with their exciting new plans.”

The brewery’s success has sparked renewed energy in the area.
“It’s amazing to see how the whole site has come alive,” says Rich. “It’s not just about beer—it’s about people. But also, it is definitely about the beer.”
Fresh Standard Brew Co. is now ready for its next chapter. The adjacent unit has become available, allowing them to expand while maintaining the taproom’s friendly vibes. Plans include a new bespoke bar, accessible toilet, wood-burning stove, and temperature-controlled beer store. There are even discussions about landscaping the bank along the cycle path to create more outdoor space for summer months.
“It’s fantastic to see Fresh Standard expanding and investing locally with the opening of their new taproom,” says Antony Hill, Chairman of Stroud CAMRA. “This is a real boost for our local beer community—not only will it bring more people closer to the brewing process, but it also showcases the quality and creativity of independent brewing right here in the Stroud area. CAMRA is always keen to support local breweries that champion cask and craft beer, and we look forward to raising a glass with the team at their new venue—mine will definitely be a Red Mild.”
To fund this expansion, Charlotte and Rich are launching a crowdfunder with a range of exciting rewards for supporters. The goal is to open more evenings a week, host pub quizzes, live music, and talks, and create a cosy, all-weather space for everyone to enjoy.
Details for the crowdfunder can be found at this address: https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/next door
Charlotte and Rich also welcome feedback from patrons on how they would like to see the new space used in 2026.
