On World Suicide Prevention Day last Sunday, Stonehouse-based Sunflowers Suicide Support illuminated hope and resilience during their Glimmer of Light event held beside the tranquil River Severn. This moving gathering brought together more than 50 individuals for an evening filled with profound reflection and heartfelt remembrance.
The event showcased the strength and unity of the community as participants were moved by the powerful and poignant poetry shared by those who have experienced the profound impact of suicide. These courageous voices echoed the themes of strength, love, and the transformative power of sharing personal stories.

The atmosphere was filled with warmth and comfort as attendees enjoyed cakes and refreshments, sharing each other’s company and celebrating the simple joys of life.
Amidst the serene setting, a playlist of soothing songs played as attendees watched the sun set over the River Severn. This breathtaking moment served as a powerful reminder that even in our darkest moments, there is a glimmer of light and the promise of brighter days ahead.

Adding a touch of awe to the evening, Mother Nature herself joined the event with a captivating electrical storm in the distance. This natural spectacle reinforced the message that, just as storms in life can bring challenges, they can also produce their own unique beauty and inspire resilience. As darkness fell, lanterns were lit to light up the darkness.

The Sunflowers Suicide Support team played a pivotal role in bringing this event to life, and their dedication and hard work were instrumental in fostering a community of support, understanding, and hope. Their tireless efforts have contributed to building a foundation of compassion and solidarity.
The timing of the event coincided with the release of the new national suicide prevention strategy, in which the government announced its ambitious five-year plan to reduce the number of suicides, which currently exceeds 5,000 each year. This strategy underscores the importance of collective efforts, with events like Glimmer of Light playing a vital role in raising community awareness and fostering open conversations about mental health and suicide prevention.

As we move forward, let us remember the importance of being a beacon of light for one another, especially during the stormy periods of life. Together, we can make a difference and save lives.
