Grrrrreat! Avening Bear Hunt returns next weekend

Families across the village are preparing to go on the hunt as the much-loved Avening Bear Hunt returns on Sunday 17th May for another afternoon packed with fun, imagination and community spirit.

Organised by the Friends of Avening School (FOAS), the popular annual event transforms Avening into a bear-filled trail, with 26 creatively decorated bears hidden around the village by local residents. Designed to be fully pushchair-friendly, the trail offers an accessible adventure for children and grown-ups alike.

The afternoon begins at Avening Memorial Hall, which will once again become the hub of the festivities. Visitors can enjoy homemade cakes, tea and coffee, ice creams, face painting, crafts, bear-themed gifts and the ever-popular “bearguettes” before setting off in search of the hidden bears.

Trail maps cost £2, and every successfully completed “secret puzzle word” entry returned will receive a sweet treat prize.

Funds raised from this year’s Bear Hunt will help support projects and experiences for pupils at Avening Primary School, including a new SEN outbuilding, creative enrichment workshops and transport for school trips.

FOAS Co-secretary Hannah Goodenough said: “The Bear Hunt is such a special event for our community. Every year we’re amazed by the creativity and enthusiasm of everyone involved, and the money raised helps FOAS provide opportunities and resources that truly benefit the children.”
