He’s the right fit for our dressing room – Richard Joyce on Tim Wilkins’ appointment

Former Brimscombe assistant manager Tim Wilkins has joined Thornbury Town.

He left Brimscombe at the end of last season, having helped them win the Gloucestershire Challenge Trophy, Hellenic Floodlit Cup, Stroud Charity Cup and Hellenic Supplementary Cup in his time at the Meadow.

Wilkins spent 17 seasons at the Lilywhites, who he joined from Shortwood United. He helped guide Brimscombe from the Gloucestershire Northern Senior League to the Hellenic Premier Division – a level they’ve remained at for now 12 seasons.

He is set to be in the dugout for the first time for Tuesday evening’s home match against Mangotsfield United (7:45pm).

First team manager Richard Joyce said: “I’d like to start by saying a big thank you to vice-chairman, Luke Jones, and reserve team manager, Simon Evans, for their great support during the pre-season matches and start to the competitive season. It’s great that they’ve been able to step up and help with the first team, extend their involvement to yet another part of the club and also be able to concentrate on their own areas.

“I’m very pleased to welcome Wandy. I’ve worked with him before and have always been in contact with him since then. He was an incredibly loyal servant at Brimscombe and enjoyed many great times there from working with Phil Baker to most recently Sam Prior.

“He’s the right fit for our dressing room as a character and up until his departure from Brimscombe at the end of last season was comfortably the longest continuously serving assistant manager in the division – so his knowhow and experience of the level will be incredibly useful.

“His appointment follows the departure a few weeks ago of Gary Kemp. Kempy has been first class since he came back to the club to join me in the final third of the 2022-23 season. He commanded the respect of all the players and many others in and around the club and played a key role in helping us continue to retain our status at this level.

“He was an enormous support to me and I’ll always be grateful for that. His knowledge and experience of the game was important for us. Hopefully when he has the time to do so we’ll see him pop his head in at the Mundy’s.”
