Nailsworth Silver Band had an historic outing to Torquay this weekend, marking a significant milestone in their musical journey.
Competing in the West of England regional of the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, the band achieved an outstanding second place finish, a feat that has etched a new chapter in their rich history.
The result was achieved in the Second Section, which is the third tier of the brass band pyramid. This historic achievement is particularly noteworthy as Nailsworth were appearing in the Second Section for only the third time, with their last appearance dating back over 30 years to 1993. The second place finish in the Second Section now stands as the band’s highest finish in their 106-year history, following on from the successes of last year where the band reached the National Final of the Third Section and achieved promotion to the Second Section.
This year’s result means that Nailsworth Silver Band has qualified for the National Finals again in September. This will be the band’s fifth final (1967, 2019, 2021, 2024, and 2025) and notably the first in the Second Section. Each of these appearances has marked a significant step in their journey, showcasing their persistent pursuit of excellence and commitment to growth.
All bands in the Section are required to perform the same piece of music, with points awarded based on the interpretation of the piece. This year’s chosen composition was called Friendly Takeover by Oliver Waespi. The adjudicators at the competition, which is judged blind, praised Nailsworth Silver Band’s performance, describing it as a ‘quality performance [with] excellent band sound and so well controlled by the Musical Director (MD)’.
Individual instruments received special accolades in the feedback, with particular nods to the ‘sonorous and lyrical flugel’, ‘impressive kit percussion’, ‘confident solo cornet’ and ‘excellent basses’. These individual praises highlight the diverse talent within the band and their collective ability to produce a harmonious and compelling sound.
MD Anri Adachi, who has conducted the band since 2020, has led the group through an unprecedented period of success. Adachi expressed immense pride in the band, stating: “The fantastic group of musicians at Nailsworth are hardworking, supportive of each other and understand that successful ensemble playing means being more than the sum of our parts. I am so proud to lead them and of this incredible performance in our first outing in the Second Section.”
The band’s history stretches back over a century, and each milestone reflects their enduring dedication to musical excellence. The achievement in Torquay not only adds to their legacy but also sets a new standard for future performances. The progression from the Third Section to the Second is a testament to their evolving skill and resilience.
