With so many festive food options available, it can be hard to choose, but we were delighted to be invited back to the popular Canteen Restaurant in Nailsworth to taste something slightly alternative for Christmas.
The always innovative and amenable owner Caroline Saturley has called on the services of circus chef Ols Halas to deliver a series of festive food and drink events alongside event organiser Calum Spencer.
A Kentucky Fried Christmas launched this month and will continue every Saturday night throughout December.
We arrived at the Canteen, hungry and excited for our night ahead. The charming Cara Greenlee greeted us and put us immediately at ease and she got our evening off to a flyer as we sipped or in my case-gulped down a thirst-quenching cocktail.
What landed on our table next was greeted with a collective ooh-aah as our gastronomic treat was placed in front of our hungry mouths.
Ols and his talented team presented us with a platter that was right on the money. Kentucky Fried Turkey was simply the best thing I have ever tasted. Traditional turkey isn’t something the majority of Britons enjoy – we only tuck into the big bird on Christmas Day, but give me the fried version any day of the week – it tasted more like chicken, but was simply divine.
Feeling merry with the spirit of Christmas and entertained by a community choir, we continued to dive in. Spoilt for choice, we devoured the fried pig in blankets that were complemented with maple syrup and wholegrain mustard. Buffalo turkey wings awaited next alongside glazed Boxing Day ham ribs, nut roast wellington and deep fried cauliflower cheese.
The food avalanche didn’t stop as we were tempted by a plethora of sides from fried corn on the cob to chestnut stuffing balls.
Feeling stuffed, we actually found room for desserts with a delicious apple pie and custard and a sumptuous gingerbread knickerbocker glory.
Mission completed, this food heaven was the perfect early Christmas present.
