England Over-70s made a winning start to the Silver Fern Series with an emphatic 84-run victory over New Zealand at Frocester.
And there was a particularly special touch to the victory as England captain John Evans starred on his home ground at Pounds Close.
Evans, who has graced the Frocester ground for decades, smashed 79 from just 94 balls, including four boundaries, as England posted an imposing 301-8.
He built a formidable partnership with opener Chris Evans to put England firmly in control.
The bowlers then finished the job in ruthless fashion.
Five England bowlers got among the wickets, but Rupert Staple did the most damage, ripping through the New Zealand middle order with an excellent 3-17.
New Zealand were eventually bowled out, leaving England with a convincing 84-run victory and a 1-0 lead in the series.
For Evans, it was a memorable day – leading his country to victory on a ground he has called home for so many years.
Evans was fulsome in his praise on a day to cherish: “I would like to thank all the club volunteers, supporters and spectators who made it such a special day for everyone.”
