How to recycle your tree with Longfield Hospice this Christmas

MOST READ

Residents across Gloucestershire are being encouraged to register to have their Christmas trees recycled this festive season, helping the environment while raising vital funds for Longfield Community Hospice.

Register by midnight on 6 January, and your tree will be collected by an army of Longfield volunteers between 10–13 January. Trees will be taken to designated collection sites, where they will be chipped and re-used.

In return, Longfield asks for a suggested donation, with all proceeds supporting the hospice’s vital work in the community.

As Stroud District Council’s Chloe Turner said: “Partnering with Longfield on Christmas tree collection and recycling allows Stroud District Council to help clear the decks for residents after the Christmas period in a sustainable way. Over four thousand real trees were turned into chippings last year, a versatile material that we can then use in grounds maintenance work in our local public green spaces. We are so pleased to support Longfield in raising funds at the same time, for its vital hospice-at-home, wellbeing and bereavement work in our communities.”

Gloucester City Council is also supporting this initiative.

In 2025, with the help of volunteers, Longfield recycled 4,100 Christmas trees, preventing approximately 66,384kg of co2 from being released into the atmosphere.  This is the equivalent of 1.3 million cups of tea with milk being made.

Also, a celebration of local community at its best, Longfield already have 35 local companies, 23 individuals and 6 community groups on board to help with the collection.
