Hundreds attend Stroud Show despite sweltering heatwave temperatures

Despite temperatures reaching more than 33 Celsius on Saturday hundreds of people enjoyed this year’s annual Stroud Show at Stratford Park.

Organiser Wendy Fabbro, Chair of the Stroud Show team, told Stroud Times: “There’s a lot going on and there’s lots of fun being had. We’ve had lots of good entertainment, though some entertainers weren’t able to carry on due to the hot weather, very sadly. But then I think we could all sympathise that – dancing or the more energetic performers are going to struggle in this sort of temperature but overall, there are lots of people here, having a great day out.”

Had this year’s show been in doubt given the predicted heatwave temperatures? “We cancelled the Teckels dog show because obviously, the dogs don’t have the same ability to cope with the heat that humans do, but no, we figured apart from the very young and the very old we can all cope with a show that is put on with significant amounts of shade and easy access to water. We’ve advised everyone to put sun cream on and to look after themselves and to make sure they drink lots of water and they will have a lovely day.”

The Edna Powell Cup was awarded to Chief Executive of The Door charity, Victoria Robson. “We presented it to The Door,” explained Wendy.

“It’s a youth charity and they’ve done some marvellous work with young people throughout the Stroud valleys, and we really appreciate all that they’ve done to help our young people.”

How can people help keep Stroud Show going for future generations? “It is a lot of work from that’s committed by a small party of volunteers to put the show on. If there were more people, we could all do just a little bit and teamwork would make a big difference,” explained Wendy.

“We would encourage anyone who can offer us some skill, maybe in horticulture or crafts, or even admin to get in touch with us at stroudshow@gmail.com and we’ll welcome them in.”
