A new boxing gym near Stroud, which opened in June this year, has proved so popular the owners are now expanding to larger premises.

Stroud Boxing Club, a Community Interest Company run by Tyrone Mcfarlane and his partner Daisy Grunfeld, and assisted by Lois Smith and Lisa Hardy, opened at Merretts Mill Industrial Estate in Woodchester and prides itself on its inclusive philosophy.

“We have all different ages, ranging from our juniors at 10 to 15, and all the way up to people of 75 years. We have women who are going through the menopause, as well as women who have just had babies. We cater for all ages and abilities,” explained Daisy.

Tyrone added: “I think it’s important to say we are an inclusive club – colour, creed, sex – it doesn’t matter. We’ve got all sorts of people coming here and what makes it special is that we all get along.

“There isn’t a boxing club in Stroud so I thought it would be great for everyone in Stroud, and to build a community around boxing. It’s gone really well and we’ve had over 100 sign-ups in six weeks. We’re constantly getting phone calls and enquiries.”

“It’s really good for your mental health, it gives you a focus and good discipline,” added Daisy.

Stroud Times’ roving reporter, Faye Hatcher, took the opportunity to try her hand at the sport.
