Shortwood swerved a banana skin of the new manager bounce at bottom of the table Abingdon United, writes Jim Cunneen.
Livewire striker Lennon Lewis hit the only goal – his fourth in seven games in a match that saw Abingdon miss a penalty with 10 minutes to go in this Hellenic League Division One West encounter in Oxfordshire.
Abingdon made a bright start and after only two minutes Bubb blazed a good chance high over the bar.
With 21 minutes gone Wood scored the only goal of the game – a good interchange of passing saw Peyton clip a lovely diagonal ball to Chalmers Phin who stripped his defender and crossed low to Lewis who hit a low shot into the bottom corner. Five minutes later Fogg put Soule in and although he rounded the keeper the angle was narrow and a defender was able to clear. Beadle hit a free-kick over and Bubb smacked another chance high and wide for the hosts. On the cusp of the break, Parsisson was grateful to fall on a loose ball with Abingdon forwards lurking.
Thomas had an early chance for Abingdon and Wood’s star man Phin was inches wide with a snapshot. Beadle delayed his shot too long after a good run and Bowles had a goal ruled out, correctly, for offside.
With 10 minutes to go Barrett did well to clear a lob from under the Wood bar and with the ball bouncing around Peyton was guilty of a rash challenge. Bubb stepped up and sent his penalty high over the bar to let Wood off the hook.
Wood are now unbeaten in six league games, winning five in that sequence.
