Letter to the Editor: ‘Dismay’ at plans to demolish landmark building

MOST READ

Dear Editor,

Is it déjà vu time or what? I am astonished to see plans afoot to demolish the landmark building that used to be the Pelican pub.

Twenty-odd years ago the same short-sightedness would have befallen the Hill Paul building had the public not raised the cash to start buying it. Officialdom has a short memory and seems to learn nothing.

I am pleased to see the Civic Society is protesting vigorously, especially as its chair, Juliet Shipman, played such a significant role in saving the Hill Paul building.

Ron Birch
