Letter to the Editor: Don’t call it a lido

MOST READ

Dear Editor,

I’m delighted that Stroud District Council has made a U-turn and that our beloved pool is now set to reopen later this summer.

One of the most debated issues surrounding the pool is its name. Many lifelong Stroud residents still know it simply as the Outdoor Pool and have never taken to the rebranded “Stratford Park Lido”. For those of us who were born and raised here, it will always be the Outdoor Pool, and that is what many of us will continue to call it.

However, Stroud District Council states on its website that a 2017 public consultation, conducted by the council, Stroud Town Council and the Friends of Stratford Park Lido, invited residents to choose from a selection of names. According to the council, “Stratford Park Lido” was the most popular choice and the pool has been known by that name ever since.

Given the strength of feeling that still exists, perhaps it is time for a fresh public vote to settle the matter once and for all.
