Letter to the Editor: please join us to celebrate John Marjoram’s life

MOST READ

Dear Editor,

Very few readers of this newspaper will not know of much loved ex-mayor and only ever elected ‘Free Man of Stroud’, John Marjoram; and now the sad news that John recently passed away at the ripe age of 86.

Not since the passing of Polly Higgins, perhaps, will the passing of a much-loved ‘Stroudie’ be touching so many people in our great town.

On Monday 2 June starting at 11 am, there will be a funeral and celebration of John’s great life in our beloved Subscription Rooms – fittingly, as John himself did so much to preserve the Sub Rooms for the people of Stroud when it was in danger of being privatised back in 2017.

John’s family, friends and former political colleagues would be delighted if you could join us in celebrating John’s remarkable life – a life and a man richly deserving the magnificent send-off that I know the people of Stroud, whom John loved so much, will want to give him. The peaceful musical send off will include taking his coffin from The Subrooms to Stroud Cemetery at the end of Horns rd

Yours sincerely,

Cllr Lucas Schoemaker

John’s friend and successor
