Letter to the Editor: Stroud District Council need to do much better in looking after community assets

MOST READ

Dear Editor,

The closure of Stroud’s outdoor pool has raised concern among many residents about how Stroud District Council is managing publicly owned community assets.

To announce it in the press just days before closing the window for taking questions from the community is scandalous.

With local government reorganisation coming up, are SDC just washing their hands of their legal obligations to look after the valued assets of our communities? Or is it just heads in the sand and “not our problem” for the next couple of years?

Residents of Stroud can and should call a “Town Meeting” to address the potential loss of the outdoor pool and other community assets currently entrusted to the District Council (Stratford Park, Old Town Hall, Mason Road etc). All of which could also be lost, sold or closed. The community deserves better reassurances that these will not also be lost. What is the plan?

Stroud District Council need to do much better in looking after community assets, and much much better in engaging with the communities that own them.
