The much-loved Stroud Farmers’ Market has announced the vegan-only market has closed.
The vegan venture, which was held monthly on a Sunday, failed to mirror the success of the award-winning Stroud Farmers’ Market, which recently celebrated 25 years supporting local food producers.
Kardien Gerbrands, market manager for Stroud Farmers’ Market insisted a lack of footfall made the vegan venture difficult to sustain, he said: “We never managed to attract enough customers to make the market viable, and when a market gets in a spiral of this nature, with stall numbers reducing month-by-month it becomes a disappointing experience, so less shoppers come.”
A lack of Sunday parking hampered the success of the market along with a lack of interest in veganism. Kardien added: “The London Road multi-storey, is closed on Sundays, which is unhelpful; Saturday in Stroud is so awesome that nearly everyone looking for the market shopping vibe is in town, meaning they are less likely to come in again on Sunday and there aren’t enough vegans to form a decent regular customer base.”
Stroud Farmers’ Market, on Cornhill Square, attracts visitors from all over the country each Saturday morning.
