Mark Hughes is emerging as a leading contender to become the next Forest Green Rovers manager following the departure of Robbie Savage.
The experienced former Manchester United striker, Wales international and Premier League manager is understood to be among the names being considered for the vacancy at The New Lawn after Savage joined League One strugglers Peterborough United this afternoon.
Hughes, 62, has managed a number of clubs during a long career in the dugout, including Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, Queens Park Rangers, Stoke City and Southampton. He left Carlisle by mutual consent at the end of last season after seeing the Cumbrians finishing third in the Enterprise National League with 95 points, and reaching the play-offs.
Hughes is also well known to Rovers sporting director Mark Bowen, with the pair having worked together at Manchester City, Stoke City, Southampton, Blackburn Rovers, Southampton, Fulham, Queen’s Park Rangers and with Wales, where Bowen served as Hughes’ assistant.
He also enjoyed a distinguished playing career with Manchester United, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn, as well as winning 72 caps for Wales.
Savage’s departure was confirmed after Forest Green chairman Dale Vince revealed that the club had given the former Wales international permission to speak to Peterborough United.
Vince said Savage had wanted to leave Forest Green for personal reasons, adding that the club understood and respected his decision.
Forest Green are now expected to move quickly to appoint a successor, with Hughes understood to be a name high on the list of potential candidates.
