LEGENDARY striker Jamille Matt has quit Forest Green.
The 33-year-old former Forest Green captain spent two-and-a-half years at The Bolt New Lawn, bagging 39 goals in 109 appearances. Matt’s 19 goals last season helped fire Rovers to the League Two title, he now joins League Two outfit Walsall, where he reunites with his former Newport boss Michael Flynn.
“”The head coach was a massive part to the decision,” said Matt, who joins the Saddlers on an 18 month deal.
“I had a very fruitful spell alongside him – and Wayne Hatswell as well – when we worked together at Newport.”
Flynn added: “Jamille is completely different to what we’ve currently got, he’s proven at this level. He’s got promotion from this level. He’s a real handful.”
Matt joined FGR in the summer of 2020 and he hit the ground running – scoring a hat-trick against Scunthorpe United on just his fifth appearance in a Rovers shirt.
The striker scored 16 goals in the 2020/21 campaign but missed the tail end of the season after suffering a freak hand injury against Bolton Wanderers. Despite missing the last nine games of the season, he was still nominated for League Two Player of the Season alongside Wes Hoolahan and Paul Mullin.
Matt became Club captain the following season and formed a lethal partnership with Matty Stevens. The duo – dubbed the Matt-Attack – scored 42 league goals between them as Rovers pipped Exeter City to the League Two title on the final day of the season. He also became Rovers’ record EFL goalscorer last season.
This term, Matt has scored two goals in 20 appearances.
