The 50th anniversary of much-loved fishmonger, deli, and seafood restaurant William’s brought together staff, loyal customers, and friends for an evening of champagne and canapés in the heart of Nailsworth.
Guests gathered to mark five decades of success and community spirit, with heartfelt speeches from both founders William Beeston and current owner Edward Playne, reflecting on the journey of this award-winning independent business.

William and Rae Beeston first opened the doors of William’s Kitchen on 16 September 1975, on the very site where Frank Carpenter had run a grocery since 1951. In those early days, customers could buy fresh fish from a marble slab in the window, alongside rabbits, fowls, and pheasants hanging outside.

From those beginnings, William’s Kitchen thrived—not only as a fishmonger and delicatessen but also as a successful outside catering business. William quickly became known as the man who “put Nailsworth on the map,” helping transform the quiet Cotswold market town into the celebrated foodie haven it is today. His clientele included a veritable “Who’s Who” of Gloucestershire, and his reputation spread far and wide: he was named one of Rick Stein’s “Food Heroes,” one of Matthew Fort’s “Five Favourite Places to Shop,” and even inspired a visit from then–Home Secretary Jack Straw in the 1990s, who declared upon arrival, “I’ve been told I must stop by William’s Kitchen.”

After 39 successful years, William retired in 2014, passing the baton to Ed and Helen Playne, who relaunched the business as William’s Food Hall & Oyster Bar. A major refurbishment in 2020 transformed the space with a new restaurant, cocktail bar, coffee bar, and fish counter—where Ed himself is often found serving customers. Helen’s experience in London’s hotel and restaurant scene has added polish and warmth, ensuring William’s remains both professional and welcoming.
