New Co-op store in former pub set to open next week

The Midcounties Co-operative will be opening a brand-new local Co-op store at 9am on Thursday 5th December in Berkeley.

The new store will be located on the site of the former Mariners Arms pub following an ambitious restoration of the Grade II listed building. The move has enabled the retailer to relocate from the previous smaller site in Salter Street, with all colleagues transferring to the newly refurbished store.

To mark the grand opening, the first 50 customers through the doors will receive a Golden Ticket, with every ticket guaranteeing a prize. Lucky customers could win anything from a luxury Christmas hamper to £100 to spend in-store. The store will open at 9am following the ribbon cutting to launch the store by Cllr Peter Hall the Mayor of Berkeley.

The new convenience store will be open from 7am to 10pm each day and will offer essential grocery items, from fruit and vegetables, fresh meat and flowers to wines, spirits and chilled beer. It will also host a wide range of award-winning COOK frozen ready meals, as well as a Costa Express machine, hot food to go.

To celebrate opening weekend, on Friday 6th and Saturday 7th December, shoppers can enjoy complimentary tastings of the best-selling COOK range, festive delights, freshly baked pastries from the in-store bakery, and a selection of Fairtrade wines, Christmas Mince pies and other Christmas treats. Plus, the little ones won’t be left out, with free fruit available just for them!

For the first 10 days, all The Midcounties Co-operative members will also receive a 10% discount every time they shop at the Berkeley store, valid until Saturday 14th December.

Customers at the new store can become members to enjoy exclusive offers across The Midcounties Co-operative’s family of services. Membership also means giving back to the community with every purchase – whether it’s a pint of milk or a holiday booking, we’re doing good together.

The Midcounties Co-operative recently launched its new Doing Good Together Fund which allows members to apply for grants to give a helping hand to local causes that matter to them. The Doing Good Together Fund has been created in response to the Society’s members, which total more than 700,000 people, who said that they wanted to be able to give back more to their local communities.

Using a greater share of the Society’s profits towards benefiting the local community, the fund will provide small grants to support important local good causes, including those in the Berkeley area – from dinner and dance sessions for those with dementia to plants for parks, from biscuits for book clubs to kits for cricket teams, and much more.

Lucy Clist, Store Manager at the new local Co-op store in Berkeley, said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to our new store in Berkeley in December. There’s going to be some brilliant activity on the opening day, with 50 great prizes up for grabs and the chance to sample some of our best-selling products over the weekend.

“We’re thrilled to be able to invest in the local area and enhance the community by offering convenience, exceptional quality, and an extensive selection of Fairtrade products. We look forward to welcoming customers to the new store – and best of luck to the first 50 visitors who will receive a Golden Ticket!”

The current Berkeley Co-op Food store will close its doors on Wednesday, December 4th, at 10pm. All employees will transition to the new store, ready to welcome customers on opening day.
